Energeia
Ashley Cluer, Eva Dixon & Salomé Wu
Shipton is pleased to present Energeia, a group show featuring Eva Dixon, Ashley Cluer and Salomé Wu.
‘Energeia’, the group exhibition curated by Juliet Wilson at Shipton, presents an exploration of the relationship between energy and art which, throughout art history, has been a pivotal reference in expressing our response to it. This exhibition draws inspiration from the insightful publication, ‘Art, Energy, and the Brain’ by Robert Pepperell, artist, fine art professor, and author.
In his 2018 article, Pepperell bridges art with neuroscience, offering insights into how our brain activity contributes to our aesthetic experiences. He discusses how artists and art historians have utilised the concept of ‘energy’ to capture and communicate the viewer’s reactions to art.
The term ‘energeia,’ originally coined by Aristotle, means ‘being-at-work’ and serves as the root for our modern word ‘energy.’ The sculptures and paintings by Eva Dixon, Ashley Cluer and Salomé Wu offer viewers an opportunity to reflect on the type of energy each piece conveys. The work will create a space for personal interpretation and emotional connection, aligning with Aristotle’s notion of ‘energeia’ as an active, experiential process.
Explore the interplay of energy and art in Energeia at Shipton where each piece offers a unique perspective on this timeless artistic conversation.
